Chair Yoga

Chair yoga is suitable for seniors and anyone managing pain, weakness or recovering from injury. When we age we start to loose strength and develop stiffness in joints and muscles. We may also have reduced strength, flexibility and mobility if we are recovering from illness or injury. Using a chair as a prop makes yoga accessible to anyone who for any reason finds it difficult to get down to the floor or back up again. Chair yoga provides options: you can sit on the chair or you can use the chair to hold onto for balance and support. We build strength and flexibility, and practice breathing and relaxation techniques to feel better in your body, mind and soul. Classes are small to allow for a more focussed and personal practice.

Community is important to me and in all my Chair Yoga classes there is an opportunity to meet other people and enjoy some conversation and company. We have fun with around 45/50 minutes of yoga followed by on opportunity to rest, chat and enjoy a hot drink.

Yoga in Life

Hello! I’m Barbara, and I'm a British Wheel of Yoga trained yoga teacher teaching yoga in Sawbridgeworth, High Wych and Old Harlow.

I teach Gentle Hatha Yoga Flow to beginners, active agers and mindful movers; and Chair Yoga to seniors and anyone managing pain or weakness. I also enjoy drawing on different styles of yoga including, Hatha, Yin, Flow, Functional and Restorative styles of yoga to provide a fully rounded experience to benefit the whole body, mind and soul in my Yoga Fusion classes. Sangha (community) is important to me and we enjoy Yoga in Life community walks and every Chair Yoga class includes time for a hot drink and chat. I also teach 1-1s where we can focus on a particular area of the body, or aspect of yoga - perhaps breathing or relaxation, or even building confidence to join a class.

Yoga is for everyone and I help men and women, seasoned yogis and those new to yoga, to an awareness of their own range of movement and help them to find their own expression of a pose. I teach techniques to improve breathing and how to focus the mind to reduce stress. I lead my students to relaxation to soothe the body and mind. We work mindfully to notice sensations in our bodies and to keep the mind focussed on the moment. My yoga classes are friendly and welcoming. Everybody is unique.
