Ashtanga Yoga

Ashtanga Yoga is a dynamic, physically demanding and flowing practice, incorporating a particular type of breathing known as Ujjayi breathing and the use of internal energy locks or bandhas. Students are led through some or all of a set series of postures, practised in a particular order, known as the Primary series. This type of yoga was first introduced and taught in Mysore, India, by Sri K. Pattabhi Jois and continues to be taught there by his grandson Sharath.

This practice aims to build heat in the body to help it to open, become more flexible and to release toxins. Through repeated practice students become familiar with the series of postures and eventually the focus moves away from the postures to following the breath and the gaze points for each posture, allowing the whole practice to be become more like a moving meditation.

My ashtanga classes are taught in a very supportive way and students are always free to modify poses as needed, and to use props if required.
Some familiarity with yoga would be helpful before joining the class, as would a reasonable level of physical fitness.

I truly believe that everyone can benefit from yoga, whatever their background, age, size or current physical condition, and my approach to teaching is one of warmth, encouragement and care and is always tailored to an individual’s needs. My main aim is to make yoga accessible and enjoyable for everyone and to help people find more ease and freedom in both their body and mind.

Having lived in London and worked in a busy office job in the publishing industry for many years before teaching, I am very aware of the stresses and challenges of big city living, and know how a regular yoga practice can be enormously helpful in dealing with these and can enable people to find more balance, space and calm in their bodies, minds and lives.
