Somatics Tune Up

This somatics workshop is aimed at athletes & yoga practitioners. It will provide you with a basic tune-up for your brain-body as it offers you the opportunity to retrain your own neuromuscular system, from the inside-out.

Many of us move through life with contractions in our musculature that acts like having the brakes on all the time. These contractions are unconscious behaviours and we generally only know they are there when we experience the long-term effects of them through the development of aches and pains, recognition of imbalances, issues with posture, alignment and limitations in our abilities to perform particular actions.

Hanna Somatics was developed in the early 1990s by Thomas Hanna and is a form of movement re-education that goes directly to the root cause of these long-term muscular issues – the brain. Tight muscles that have learned to stay contracted due to repeated stresses (such as: accidents, injuries, surgeries, repetitive tasks, and on-going emotional events) results in what is know as Sensory Motor Amnesia (SMA). The resulting patterns of muscular contraction that develop can result in common conditions such as chronic back pain, neck, shoulder and hip pain, limited mobility, joint pain, poor posture, shallow breathing, and uneven leg length. Through Hanna Somatics we learn to regain both awareness, sensation, and motor control of muscles to enable the brain to remember how to relax and move the muscles more efficiently and effectively. This process of sensory motor training creates improved muscle functioning and enhanced sensory awareness.

This workshop will introduce you to the basic concepts of Somatics as developed by Thomas Hanna. You will be experientially shown ways to recognise the impact of SMA for yourself. We’ll look at why, from a functional movement perspective, the core of the body is important and why, neurologically, this may be the area where you are most likely to develop SMA.

You’ll be introduced to ‘Pandiculations’ and learn how slowing down movements can help you repattern muscle functioning by shifting the area of the brain being utilised in directing muscle activity. You will then be guided through sequences of simple easy movements designed to help release SMA from the front, back and sides of the core of your body. Through these movements, muscles are gradually reprogrammed – affecting flexibility, providing regaining strength, and enhancing overall mobility, leaving you with a greater of sense of power, ease, freedom and wellbeing.
